Sediment, visible particles and turbidity: start with the cause.

What visible particles and turbidity mean, possible causes and what sediment filtration can and cannot do.

Sediment is a physical-particle problem

Sediment filtration is designed for suspended particulate matter such as sand, rust, dirt and silt. A pleated polypropylene first stage provides a physical barrier that captures particles above its effective pore size.

Sediment is different from dissolved hardness, dissolved salts, chlorine or many organic chemicals. One filter stage should not be expected to solve every water characteristic.

Why particles may appear

Visible particles or discolouration can arise from work on the distribution network, disturbed deposits in mains, internal plumbing corrosion, tanks, private supplies or other site-specific causes.

Because some water-quality changes can indicate a network or plumbing issue, persistent or unusual discolouration should not simply be filtered and ignored. Contact the relevant water supplier or a licensed plumber where appropriate.

Turbidity is not exactly the same as sediment

Turbidity describes the cloudiness of water caused by suspended material. It is measured instrumentally and is an important operational parameter in drinking-water treatment.

A household sediment cartridge can capture particulate material, but it is not a substitute for public-water treatment or microbiological risk management.

Where sediment filtration fits in a whole-home system

Putting sediment filtration first helps protect downstream carbon cartridges from avoidable particulate loading. It also makes the role of each stage clear: physical particle capture first, followed by carbon-based treatment.
